Much of the 1,000 tons of syrup, worth up to $30 million, was sold to buyers unaware of its origins and believing Maple farmers made it in neighbouring New Brunswick. Two Vermont companies that bought the stolen syrup, Maple Grove Farms and Highland Sugarworks, were not responding to requests for interviews.

A private organization that unites them and supports their interests is the Federation of Quebec Syrup Producers (FPAQ). Since 1989, FPAQ manufacturers have complied with a collective agreement to market their products.
